SITUATION
As a precautionary measure, Response Products has issued a voluntary recall of product from two lots of its Advanced Cetyl M Joint Action Formula for Dogs. This recall—while voluntary—is due to POSSIBLE Salmonella contamination from a product ingredient (hydrolyzed vegetable protein) manufactured and supplied by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. of Las Vegas, Nevada.

We are pleased to report that multiple product samples of Advanced Cetyl M Joint Action Formula for Dogs have been tested at different stages of the manufacturing process by independent, outside resources and that NO product contamination has been found. More importantly, there have been NO reports of illness—either human or animal—from any customers.

We are also pleased to report that NONE of our other products or lot numbers for Advanced Cetyl M Joint Action Formula for Dogs are affected. Established in 1998, this is the first product recall of any kind at Response Products.

This voluntary recall is related to a much larger ingredient recall announced by Basic Food Flavors, Inc., of its hydrolyzed vegetable protein. Like hundreds of other leading national brands, Advanced Cetyl M Joint Action Formula for Dogs has used this common flavor-enhancing ingredient safely and without incident for many, many years. More than 10,000 products from other companies are affected by the Basic Food Flavors recall.

As a standard practice and as part of our quality and safety assurance protocols, Response Products requires testing for Salmonella and other harmful pathogens to be completed at critical control points in the manufacturing process. These protocols are consistent with the rigorous quality and safety control guidelines of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) established in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration, the Center for Veterinary Medicine and the American Association of Feed Control Officials.

While all testing of Advanced Cetyl Joint Action Formula for Dogs at each critical control point in the process has been negative for Salmonella (including the two lots in question), we have taken this voluntary and precautionary step out of an abundance of caution—and in keeping with our commitment to assure the very safest, highest quality and most effective products possible.

SYMPTOMS RESULTING FROM SALMONELLA
People who handle contaminated raw, unprocessed human foods and dry pet food, treats and/or health tablets can become infected with Salmonella, particularly if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the contaminated product or surface.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare provider.

Pets infected with Salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has exhibited these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported in the United States every year in people. Because many milder cases are not diagnosed or reported, the actual number of infections may be thirty or more times greater.

RETURN POLICY
Response Products will replace any product remaining from the two affected lots free of charge, including shipping. We ask only that you return the product in question for verification.  If you have product from the two affected lots, be sure to discontinue use and contact Response Products or the place of purchase for further instructions.

Consumers and wholesale/retail outlets may contact Response Products by e-mail at customerservice@responseproducts.com or by phone at 1-877-266-9757, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST.

Your safety and satisfaction—and that of your animals—is our highest priority. We are grateful for your business and for the trust you have placed in us. We apologize for any inconvenience that may result from this voluntary recall and look forward to serving you in the future with the same care and attention that have become the hallmark of our company.

Jul 2Brown Rice Bests for Diabetes Prevention-US News And Report

 By Serena Gordon

HealthDay Reporter
MONDAY, June 14 (HealthDay News) -- Substituting brown rice or another whole grain for white rice can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, new research suggests.
Five or more servings of white rice a week increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 17 percent, according to the study, which is published in the June 14 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. But replacing white rice with brown rice could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16 percent, the study found.
"This is an important message for public health. White rice is potentially harmful for the risk of type 2 diabetes," said the study's lead author, Dr. Qi Sun, an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
"Over the last decade, rice consumption in the U.S. has really increased a lot, but more than 70 percent of the rice consumed is white rice," said Sun, who added, "People should replace white rice with brown rice or whole grains."
The reason that brown rice may offer some protection, according to Sun, is that it still contains many of the nutrients and fiber that are stripped away in the production of white rice. During the refining and milling process necessary to make white rice, the rice loses a significant amount of its fiber and most of the vitamins and minerals, according to the study.
"When you have just the white rice, it's mostly protein and starch, and you're making freer carbohydrates that are easy to digest," said Dr. Jacob Warman, chief of endocrinology at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York City.
"With white rice, the digestive enzymes can more easily penetrate the rice grains and release the starch for digestion. After ingesting white rice, blood sugar increases more rapidly," Sun said.
To analyze how those differences affect the body over the long term, Sun and his colleagues culled data from three different studies involving nearly 200,000 participants. The studies (Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the Nurses' Health Study I and II) included 39,765 men and 157,463 women, and contained detailed data on dietary intake that was updated every four years over a 14- to 22-year follow-up.
After adjusting the data to control for many other factors that could contribute to type 2 diabetes -- such as body mass index, family history, age and other dietary habits -- the researchers found that the consumption of white rice was associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while regular consumption of brown rice was linked to a reduced risk.
People who ate at least five servings of white rice a week had a 17 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes, while those who ate at least two servings of brown rice a week reduced their risk of type 2 diabetes by 11 percent.
The researchers estimate that if people replaced white rice with brown rice, the risk of type 2 diabetes would go down by 16 percent.
One problem Sun and his colleagues discovered while doing the study was that brown rice consumption was relatively low during the study period. It's only in recent years that brown rice is becoming more popular. So, the researchers also evaluated the effect that replacing white rice with whole grains would have and found that the risk of diabetes would be 36 percent lower.
"There was a very strong association between whole grains and a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes. We recommend replacing white rice with brown rice or other whole grains," said Sun.
"In general, bulking up on grains is a good idea, and this -- switching to brown rice from white -- is such an easy substitution to make," said Warman.

Jan 8 Science Diet Reviews from dogfoodanalysis.com?

*This food receives a 1 star rating simply because there is nothing lower.

The primary ingredient in the food is brewers rice which is a low quality grain that is by-product of the alcohol industry for which the AAFCO definition is “the dried extracted residue of rice resulting from the manufacture of wort (liquid portion of malted grain) or beer and may contain pulverized dried spent hops in an amount not to exceed 3 percent.”
The second ingredient is Corn gluten meal, another low quality ingredient. Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. We prefer not to see this used in dog food. The AAFCO definition of corn gluten meal is "the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm". In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed. Corn appears a second time as the fourth ingredient.

The next ingredient in this food is by-products. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”
